A woman entered Citizens National Bank on a Friday, cashed a $25 check and received $20 and $5 bills. She asked if the money was wild cat currency and exchanged it for gold to test its authenticity, then departed, illustrating prevailing public unrest.
Green Ramsey, 71, was granted a divorce from Elizabeth Ramsey, 55, in Lawrence Circuit Court on Friday. They married in March 1902. he has been paralysed for about a year and she reportedly refused to care for him. She now lives with a son near Heltonville. Ramsey, a well known local figure, has children from previous marriages. Cruel and inhuman treatment was alleged in the complaint.
At 4 o clock Tuesday Alfred Stanfield lost his right arm in a corn shredder at Elizabethtown. Richard Clark aged 35 of Sprunika Brown county had his right hand cut off while shredding corn on Thomas Polen s Brown county farm. Amputations occurred between the wrist and elbow. Doctors Genolin Wood and a Mor gantown physician treated the injured men. Both shredders were owned by the accident victims.
At Unity Thanksgiving services on Thursday an offering was taken for Charity Work at the City hospital. The collection totaled 27.80 dollars.
Claude G. Davis of Oolitic arrested in Terre Haute on a desertion charge for leaving wife and five children six months ago. He claimed false names, faced $500 bond, pleaded not guilty, and a December 12 trial was set. He previously served time in Vigo County jail and roamed the central states, including Colorado.
Judge James M. Leathers appointed Bernard Korbly as receiver for the Grand hotel company after a late filed receivership petition by John Pohlman & Co. The company is solvent but unable to meet debts in the ordinary course. Korbly qualified and began immediate proceedings, with no hotel closing planned.
Dr. J N Hurty proposes a pension at age 60 for individuals free of preventable disease to encourage health practices. He argues this would cut state costs, reduce hospital and relief needs, and improve public morals. He warns consumption stems from ignorance avarice and self indulgence and urges universal access to clean air and health education.
Edward Melter died after a chloroform operation at Norton Infirmary. Misses Carrie and Lillie Melter and Joseph Melter attended the funeral in Louisville. Burial took place at Cave Hill Cemetery. Lorena Callahan returned home from a country visit with her grandfather.

A social time followed as friends departed wishing many returns of the day.
Mrs B J White hosted a Thanksgiving style dinner Thursday honoring newly married Mr and Mrs Roscoe White. Attendees included Mr and Mrs James White and children Mr and Mrs William Russell and baby Mr and Mrs Ed Horne and children Mr John White and Misses Stella and Blenne Allen. The gathering was a social, pleasant occasion.
O. W. Stephenson and Miss Eva Lou Compton, noted Orleans society figures, were married last Wednesday evening at the bride’s grandfather home. The groom is a leading business man and the bride, renowned for musical talent and social circles in Bedford.

Harry Pope son of Mr and Mrs Emmett Pope of Mitchell died in Denver Colorado Thursday night after a brief pneumonia illness. A Mitchell High School graduate he had many friends in Bedford. The funeral was held Saturday at 2 30 pm from the Methodist church with Mrs James M Myers and Mr and Mrs J R Pope in attendance.
Mrs. Elizabeth Knight aged 63 died Saturday morning at the Central Hospital for the Insane in Indianapolis from heart trouble. She was admitted from Lawrence county on April 13 1884 and left behind her son John C. Knight a Monroe county school teacher and former husband Shadrick C. Knight. A sister Mrs. Jane Adams lives in Bartlettsville. The remains were brought to Ley and buried in Bartlettsville.
A fire alarm sounded by the mill whistle sparked panic in Fort Ritner as James Clark’s house burned briefly. Most residents were away at farms and chores. The blaze was confined to the Clark residence with no additional damage.
Andy McBarron, a well known man about town, was taken to the County Infirmary this morning by Chief of Police Gratzer. The once energetic quarry and mill worker had drank heavily in recent months and left his labor. He is said to have "gone over to the hills to the poor house," and his death or end is noted with sadness and regret.
After sixteen days of hard fighting over the panel, a twelve jurors jury was secured for the Caleb Powers trial. Eight Democrats and four Republicans were chosen from Grant and Harrison counties, with witnesses for the State called as the indictment read and the case outlined. Judge Williams highlighted partisan bias as a motive factor while recounting the crime and alleged conspiracy. Court adjourned for the day with defense reserved.
In Justice Iseminger's court Wade was fined five dollars and costs on the charge of public indecency. Prosecuting witness Mrs. J Sam Fisher alleged insult. Wade was first arraigned in police court but discharged by Mayor Stipp after the prosecutor failed to appear. Fisher chastised him on the northside after encounter. She later filed a new affidavit leading to the fine.
Thursday evening Miss Sophia Williams hosted friends at Mrs. Henry Jamison’s corner 8th and 6th. Games entertained the group, with attendees Misses Josie Williams Della Taylor Bessie Vaught Alice Taylor Lutishie Williams Goldie Vaught Isis Williams Tessie Brown Sophia Williams and Messrs. John Able Isaac Rush Chas Tumey Samuel Davis Alvin Brown Pulaski Smith. Refreshments were served at a late hour.
The Southern Indiana Railroad Company complains to the Railroad Commission that the Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern refuses to take money and that a joint coal rate of 50 cents per ton from Linton to Lehman is improperly split. The suit also notes B&O S W refusal to receive the Southern Indiana share and seeks a fair profit division. The report also covers the withdrawal of Boruff & Bouriff from the Andrew Gullet v Smith alienation case.
The Bloomington Telephone reports 43 relatives gathered at Judge Duncan's West Kirkwood home for Thanksgiving. More than 30 traveled from Lawrence County, joining four generations including Hiram Batman and wife, Dr. Newland, Mrs. Cummings, and baby John Duncan Rainbolt among attendees.
Mrs William Walker of Chicago, mother of Walter S Becktel who was injured on the Monon railroad near Horse Shoe, arrived to take charge. She says the accident worsened his hearing from a prior incident and that he has roving habits despite a good Chicago home. Becktel improves and doctors expect recovery. the grandfather, a wealthy man, will pay all incurred hospital expenses.
Wade was arrested on a public indecency charge sworn by Mrs. J Sam Fisher. In police court the prosecutor failed to appear and Mayor Stipp discharged Wade for want of prosecution. Mrs. Fisher tried to chastise him on the public square, landing blows before friends moved her to Justice Iseminger. Wade was re arrested and the case set for 4 o'clock.
M. Taylor Carmichael, prominent Monroe county citizen and stock dealer, was stricken with paralysis Friday near the Mathers Stone quarry five miles south of Bloomington and is in precarious condition with little hope for recovery. He was known in Bedford and Lawrence counties and formerly active in Democratic party politics.
Mrs. Mary Rogers of near Erie has returned from a visit near Salem. She is the mother of Mrs. John B. Malott and at over 91 remains unusually well preserved and agile. She plans to visit relatives in northern Michigan soon.
Lew Ferguson expands at South H street with 1850 feet of glass for lettuce under glass and 300 feet for hot beds. He aims to create local demand for year round vegetables. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. John L Mitchell on East 16th Street.
A sequence of burglaries and suspicious luggage moves links a Miami Ohio jewelry heist and later thefts at the Opecomeca club house to Coxton, Bedford police deducing two heavy grips carry booty from the Miami robbery. A search warrant and inspection of suitcases are planned today.
An unsigned letter received by State Treasurer Oscar Hadley alleges a planned robbery of the Indiana State Treasury. The letter, mailed Nov 25, describes a scheme by three office officials and mentions two alleged Black conspirators to guard a State House policeman and signal the burglars. The treasury remains guarded at night by those connected to the office.
The Sun day School primary department hosted a Thanksgiving juvenile party at the Baptist church parlors. Miss Alice Morgan has hosted this event for years and this year offered speeches dialogues and songs followed by brick cream lady fingers and candy. Miss Gladys Gainey assisted. Monta Cook and Ruby Smith served refreshments.
Mrs Delbert Owen died Sunday in Denver Colorado where she had been taken about a year ago by her husband for health reasons. A Vigo county native she had lived in Lawrence county before moving to Denver. Funeral and interment will be held in Denver on Wednesday.
Government forester Gifford Pinchot and the Indiana board of forestry promote tree planting among farmers. In Warrick and nearby counties, waste land is being replanted with black locusts and hardy catalpas to provide fence posts and potential income. A 50,000 trees plantation near Gentryville in Spencer County marks a major effort by Thomas P. Littlepage and W. B. Bunton, despite locust borers posing a risk.
The grand jury was empaneled at 1 8 and W N Ellison chosen foreman. Thomas Brannon asked to be excused and was replaced by D B Embree. Judge Wilson instructed the jury and they retired at 2 to begin duties. A damage suit Johnson vs Monon railroad was postponed after Miss Kate Johnson was badly burned at noon.
Mrs. Mary Schumbach sues Joseph Hibner proprietor of a Seymour grocery for 500 dollars alleging he sold her eleven year old son a toy pistol and blank cartridges. The boy injured his hand while experimenting. The defendant has already paid a fine for selling the toy.
Mrs. Maurice McGrath hosted a euchre gathering Saturday afternoon with six tables. Prizes went to Mrs. Louise Tracy for first and Mrs. Henry Furst of Chicago for guest prize. A two course luncheon followed. out of town guests included Mr. LeBus of Cynthiana and others.
