Rufford Glimpse, wounded in a Sunday morning gunfight at Oolitic, rests and shows signs of recovery. Two youths who disappeared after the incident remain missing, and authorities expect no charges if all victims recover.
Lawrence county farmers report a bumper bumper cats crop this season with large grain and high yields. One farmer threshed twenty eight bushels per acre and others may reach forty in small lots while wheat remains thin due to a bad winter.
Walter Gyger of Highland Park reports his son INUONAY BEUFORD BOY INUONAY OT AIGEEN has joined the United States Navy and recently underwent an appendicitis operation on the 23rd. He is stationed at Portsmouth, Virginia and is recovering well with expected rapid improvement.
W C Winstandley receives word of his sister Sue Winstandley death in Lake George New York after a long cancer illness. Reared in New Albany she lived there before joining her sister's household and traveling east. Funeral arrangements unknown locally. remains to be moved to New Albany for services and family burial.
Leslie Pitts son of J S Pitts of West 14th street was hurt Tuesday after stepping on a nail at the Boniface Weber Allen wholesale store at 13th and I streets. The nail pierced the right foot but is not expected to cause serious trouble and he will be laid up only a few days.
Twelve teams are at work southwest of the city on a large hole for a new sub station. The foundation for a pumping plant nears completion and the sedimentation basin work is advancing. The project aims to clarify water and enable metered usage, reducing waste and boosting plant earnings.
Mrs Albert Dunihue and Mrs James Stephenson hosted a mid summer social at West Sixteenth street for Miss Markham of Terre Haute with guests including Mrs R B Dale and Mrs Stephen Smith of New Orleans and Mrs Cloud Buchanan. Mrs William Kingman won the high score prize a white linen bag. Mrs Smith took the guest prize a crocheted bow. Dainty summer refreshments were served.
With the seats installed the new city court room and council chamber will be nearly complete. It was hoped to be ready for the next city council meeting but may not be usable for about two more weeks. The room is on the second floor of City Hall opposite the City Engineer and Water Works Superintendent offices and can hold many spectators for council meetings or police court.
Charles A. Greathouse state superintendent clarifies his position on year round schools. He says he would not extend the regular course through twelve months. Idle months would be used for industrial arts with sessions limited to a half day.
Charles Scoggan, employed at the Doyle quarry, slipped at the edge of a nine foot ledge and fell into space Tuesday at 10, badly bruised about the head. He was transported to the city by Dr. Pearsons’ car. injuries not serious but he will be off work several days. He had a narrow escape from a serious accident.
Mrs Parker Lary recovering from appendicitis was moved from City Hospital to her mother Mrs D L Laforce home on West 17th street. During convalescence friends will be welcomed.
The stone crusher near Blue Hole quarry was relocated south of the city today. Stone for quarrying will come from Melter farm and be used to repair county roads and streets. Mrs. George Parks and daughter Miss Mary have returned home from Fayetteville after visiting Mr. and Mrs. John Newland.
Harry Donica, recently sold to Columbus of the American Association from Frankfort, Ky., came in as a ninth inning pinch hitter against Toledo. He singled in his only at bat, then scored on a circuit of the bases, delivering Columbus its sole run in a 3 to 4 loss.
The Indianapolis News notes Rev. A. E. Dubber of Bedford preached the Sunday sermon at Bethany Park after arriving Saturday night. A large Morgan County crowd attended morning and evening services with Martinsville choirs and the Martinsville Sunday School orchestra providing entertainment.
Fire ripped through Elmer Scott’s dry drink establishment at Patten Hill a few days after his home burned. Neighbors spotted the blaze near noon Tuesday but few men were present to fight it. The wooden two room building was destroyed with most contents, and the Meno brothers of Reeds Station reportedly owned the property.
Newton K. McFadden a longtime Harrodsburg merchant died suddenly from apoplexy at his Indianapolis home. He is survived by a widow and daughter Mrs. A. W. Hon of Indianapolis. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Harrodsburg Presbyterian church after the Monon noon train, with Rev. Bair officiating.
City and county barbers contest their eligibility for a Thursday match at Washington Park. Managers argue over lineups while officials allow any in good standing. Tickets sold benefit charity with losers to host a chicken supper for the group.
A petition is circulating at Oolitic to repair several badly deteriorated roads. Theini protests have grown into a focused effort with widespread discussion among residents who use the streets daily. Officials are expected to act as the movement gains momentum.
Bedford’s seasoned pros defeated the Linton Independents 2 to 0 in a seventh inning scoreless game. The Bedford lineup featured star Bob Wicker and a near pro roster while Linton’s Sunday squad faced a tougher, professional unit.
Thornton Allen, a Bedford native, travels to Los Angeles with partner Mr Halbert to start an engraving business. He has four years of engraving company experience and is well equipped to succeed in the new venture.
Stone bases for the new cluster lighting system were set today near the Court House park. The bases give a clear idea of the completed posts which will soon be seen as the first lights are turned on in this section.
Mrs Charles Owen recovering after surgery at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago will be moved to her sister Mrs Emma Noake's home. Miss Katie Conley of Anadarko Okla visited relatives here and left for Mitchell. Miss Belle Thornton, living with her daughter Mrs Albert Allen, left today for an extended visit to Los Angeles to see her son Henry Thornton and family.
