An inch of rain fell in several counties Wednesday evening, delivering a million dollars worth of relief as thunder showers cooled hot fields across northern Indiana. Fire harms were averted as crops benefited from the rainfall.
In Chicago on July 31, six thousand troops armed with machine guns could not stop race rioting in the Black Belt. A group attacked a returning worker at the stock yards and a lone Black man was beaten. Soldiers intervened and dispersed the mob amid clashes with white aggressors.
Washington July 31 President Wilson considers the high cost of living and may ask Congress to act. A report by Warren Stone warns of unrest and possible bread riots if prices stay high.

Ida May Mungie was jailed Wednesday evening after she could not post 1200 bond for her Tuesday appearance on the charge of provoke on Cora Perry and surety of the peace. The trial is set for Tuesday forenoon at 10 o clock in Justice Smith's county.
The Internal Revenue Service plans a statewide reorganization with Bedford as a division headquarters and twelve new general divisions to cover Indiana. Lead offices will operate year round in Indianapolis Terre Haute Evansville Gary South Bend Fort Wayne Muncie Logansport Lafayette Columbus New Albany and Bedford with sub offices in Richmond Marion Anderson Kokomo Hammond East Chicago Michigan City Elkhart and Lawrenceburg. Zone Deputies will also be posted in every city over 5 000 population each month and in nearby counties to extend field service.
William Gyger of South N Street received word that his foster brother Charles Wagoner died Wednesday night in Madison Hospital. Wagoner, born in Heltonville fifty nine years ago, was raised by Mr and Mrs Isaiah Gyger. He became mentally deranged last April and was taken to Madison for care.
Thomas Box sells his trotting mare Frances Hemetway to a Mr Curry of Aurora Illinois for 1000 dollars. The animal was shipped Wednesday night by express to the new owner. Mr and Mrs Charles Taylor plan to move from South M street into the William Gyger property on South M street.
George Hendrickson, a noted mussel shell buyer from Williams, visited town en route to Rivervale to load four carloads for button factories. He notes shells are scarcer and pricier, saying he once paid 80 dollars per ton and is now paying 60 dollars per ton.

Mrs Valentine Mullen, aged widow, passed away at her residence Wednesday night following a brief illness. Funeral arrangements were to be announced by the Mullen family and will be held in the city.
Mrs Valentine Mullen died after eight weeks bed confinement from liver complications linked to influenza. Born Helen Osborne January 22 1880 in Loogootee she died July 30 1919 in Bedford at 39.6.8. Survived by husband Valentine Mullen four children Louise Osborne Myrtle John Francis. mother Mrs Sarah Osborne sister Mrs Millard Ray brothers Ray and Lee Osborne. Funeral party departed six Friday morning for Loogootee for services and interment.
Mrs. Eving Lewis of Needmore spent the weekend in the city as the guest of Mrs. Charles Tumey.
Indiana historical commission asks county committees to finish war records by September 30. Lawrence County leads in manpower and activities but must improve cooperation to earn state history recognition. residents urged to file records at Franklin's Drug Store for posterity.
