Berlin April 22 Counsel lor Passy sacks Liberal Leader and Vice President of the Reichstag declared Germany would never return the land it conquered. He urged pushing to the English Channel to seize British strongholds as a condition for permanent peace and said Belgium must be retained contrary to recent peace talk.
Logansport Indiana April 22 Fire swept two infirmary wards of the Northern Hospital for the Insane injuring no one but threatening 91 patients most of them bed ridden. An explosion of a coal oil stove caused the blaze with a $25000 loss and no insurance.
A woman identified as weolfi, living south of the city near Palestine with four children, swallowed her false teeth Wednesday night. She remains in very serious condition as doctors consider possible surgical removal to extract the lodged teeth.
Bedford High School pupils and others show interest as Evansville hosts a Track and Field meet on Saturday April 24 at 1 30 at the Sedimentation Basin track. Events include sprints hurdles distance jumps and the mile relay with a varied order of events.
John Hendrickson known as Cutler Hendrickson drove a one horse wagon for Louis Walker hauling cinders from the electric light plant when the horse sank into a pile of hot tar and cinders. The animal burned badly and died shortly after the incident.
Oil for street lubrication arrived Thursday and will be spread across Washington Avenue from 16th to 21st streets, N street segments between 15th-17th streets, I street 16th-17th, and 10th street 16th-17th, with rain delaying the start.
Ed Starr, living east of the city, suffers a badly infected hand after an injury once deemed minor. A local physician treats to prevent blood poisoning. Meanwhile, the six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Beyers of Oolitic is ill with tonsillitis.
A fire swept across more than two hundred acres causing ten thousand dollars in damage. Fire crews battled the blaze through the day with authorities estimating the loss. No injuries reported.
A suspect linked to the Sanders store heist pleaded guilty and faces a prison term of ten to twenty years in state custody. The plea resolves the robbery case with a recommended sentence range.
A major wildfire burned more than 290 acres in Brown County affecting tall timber and fencing across the countryside. Authorities suspect arson and plan a Grand Jury review while farmers and workers battled the blaze in shifts and men from Nashville aided in containment. Homes and fences were threatened though most structures were saved, with wildlife fleeing the flames.
Stewart pleaded guilty in Monroe Circuit Court to stealing from William Mercer store in Sanders Sunday night and taking a Harney horse and buggy along with chickens. He threatened residents and resisted arrest, and the judge sentenced him to prison after the guilty plea. The horse and buggy were located near Mitchell. Mrs. C. M. Lemon left for Cincinnati with companions to attend a Baptist Missionary Convention.
The Home Economics Club met yesterday with Mrs William F P Brooks on West 14th street. Mrs J H Underwood presented a recap of the club's past work and papers on Eggs and Mutton were read by Mrs Noe and Mrs Furst. Brick ice cream cake and mints were served. Next month will cover Vegetables Digestion Place of Vegetables in the Menu and Menu requirements for school children. Eunice Baker was found guilty by Justice Malott of beating John A Lewis out of a $3 board bill, fined $3 plus costs totaling $18.15 and jailed for nonpayment. Mesdames Sidney Chestnut and Cal Bair guests of Mrs Lincolu Beyers. Henry Cassady received a corn popping machine for his Nickel Hotel business. Mrs George B Beggers and Esther Clark of Louisville are visiting Bartlettaville residents.
Judge Swails denied a new trial for Ed Coulter after a guilty verdict for forgery. Coulter was sentenced to two to fourteen years in the Michigan City penitentiary and will likely be moved there Friday. Coulter’s daughters Eva and Naomi, aged 12 and 14, were placed with Captain Schnarr of the Salvation Army while charges against them are considered. Their Nebraska grandmother may offer a home if they are released.
The case of Champ F. Crawford versus Lehigh Portland Cement Co. for damages was set for Thursday. Crawford failed to arrive. Mitchell was found in serious condition and mental impairment noted by a physician. Crawford was later found insane, taken to Bedford, then jailed for safety until asylum. He is about 45, Kentucky-born, with a wife and four children, resident of Mitchell for three years.
John Bishop, corporal of the Lawrence Grays in the Second Indiana Regiment, died in Independence Missouri on April 13. Born June 18 1829 at Bedford Indiana he enlisted at seventeen and later farmed in Iowa Nebraska and California advising temperance and strong church work. He left three surviving children and was the last of his generation in the Bishop family.
The circuit court has scheduled the action Syke versus McMillan for trial on a date to be announced, concerning injuries allegedly arising from an incident in the county.
