Bloomington Indiana March 27 Raymond Malott a University student and brother of Mayor Malott and Noble Malott announced his engagement to Edith Spencer of Huntington. A rumor claimed they are already married and would reveal details in June when Malott sails for the Philippines to take a government post. he did not deny the rumor.

H P Pearson for John W Pennington files in Lawrence circuit court a $5000 damages suit against the B and O railroad alleging negligence in a December 24 1907 passenger collision at I Street station. Pennington says he suffered severe injuries to his left side and was permanently incapacitated from manual labor. The crash involved an outbound train breaking on a hill opposite the Bedford light plant and rejoining with force.
A smoke-house at the West Armstrong place four miles west of Fayetteville owned by Mrs. Ann Lackey and used by Howard Lackey burned after a smudge from meat drying. Mrs. Howard Lackey, alone at the house, suffered burns while trying to fight the flames as wind spread fire to the dwelling which was destroyed along with its contents. About half the contents were saved. The house valued at about 1500 dollars and Howard Lackey's loss estimated near 400 dollars. no insurance reported. Police note two weeks remain in court term. trial delays discussed. Cited earlier February incident linked to Mills and Cassell, with Mills killed and Cassell wounded, Cassell later jailed then moved to Spencer to await grand jury action.
Joseph Kapowah Kapshaw of Oolitic has been missing since Monday. Earlier believed to have drowned in Salt Creek, the theory gained support from a found hat. New reports place him in Kentucky, with friends noting a departure after ten days wages. A Salt Creek search was planned but abandoned.

A Decker Knox County school district dismissed classes after lice ran through the building. Miss Katherine Ward noticed pupils shunning a classmate, prompting inspection led by Principal Tarbett. Rooms were scrubbed, disinfected, and fumigated, but only 22 of 200 pupils returned next day.
Policeman David Lennox of Pittsburg intoxicated on Monday organized a drinking spree at a saloon. About ten men drank heavily. Henry Thompson collapsed after eight drinks and died en route to the station. A giant unnamed man allegedly outdrank all but also fainted from the bout.
Nancy A Warford daughter of John Warford of East Sixteenth street died Friday morning at 8 o'clock after a lingering illness with tuberculosis. The funeral will be from the family residence Sunday at 2 PM with services by Rev. J W Findley of the First Presbyterian church. Interment will be at Beech Grove.
George Inman a well known farmer near Williams died Saturday at 5 o clock from heart disease after six weeks illness. He was 48 and survived by four sons including Walter Inman of this city. Funeral held Monday at 10 o clock at Indian Creek church.

Reports show massive damage across Chilapa Chilpancingo and surrounding towns with 200 to 800 dead in Chilapa alone. City of Mexico reports 200 buildings ruined while the quake traced a 500 mile line west of 99th parallel from Mier to Chilapa. The largely volcanic zone near Popocatapetl suffered severe losses on April 15 1907.

Ex Judge James W. Brown of Cheney Washington passes away at an assumed age near 101. Born 1824 in Lawrence County Indiana he graduated Indiana University Law 1857 practiced in Indiana then Iowa before moving to Washington ten years ago to farm near Cheney. Also recorded are two marriages in Owen County with Justice George O Iseminger officiating.
John W Hudson a veteran real estate agent appeared in public without his whiskers for the first time in forty years. He noted the change and said he feels better, despite friends teasing him about his beardless chin. The last time he shaved was in 1868 at Burlington Iowa.
Lawrence County Democratic chairman John H. Underwood returned from the State convention where he aided in pushing Bloomington candidate Robert J. Aley for Superintendent of Public Instruction. An impromptu IU yell rallied delegates, drawing in university graduates and turning the vote toward Aley in a notable dark horse victory.
The Masonic Lodge of Bedford will occupy its new temple in the Norton block on West Fifteenth street. Paraphernalia was moved Saturday from the Wilson building to the new site. The temple was built by Mr. Norton to meet lodge requirements and a new hall carpet was laid. The downstairs is unfinished but the third floor is ready for Brethren.
Property owners along public highways oppose nailing signs to trees as it ruins lumber value and scars scenery. Law exists and the issue may reach the Grand Jury. A. E. Matthews sells Ellettsville stone plant to Matthews Bros and becomes superintendent. A son is born to Mr. and Mrs. James Corbin on West 17th Street.
An overturned lantern caused a $3,000 fire at Mitchell Lime Company plant in Rock Lick Friday night. Flames engulfed sheds and kiln area, with only the machinery spared. fire seen from Bedford. Loss partly insured. repairs to begin soon.
In Ellettsville with 709 population, 30 typhoid cases including 24 in critical condition, several deaths. Health officer follows state lab results showing wells filled with typhoid bacteria. residents ordered to boil water and children to carry boiled-water flasks to school.
