The Holt Independent School held an election Monday March 20 for student officers. Ralph McPherrin won the one year vacancy and Merle Allen the three year term.
Mrs R D Beery relocated Tuesday to her recently purchased east gravity property. Glen Lock rents Mrs Glen Warner's North Gravity property and plans to move his family there by April first. Homer Beemer and family moved Tuesday from Gravity to the Burwell farm west of town.
The Oak Hill Ladies Aid met March 22 at Mrs. Howard Caskey’s home with readings by Jessie Fuelberth Mrs Liston Glen Dunkin and others. They planned an April 8 food sale at Corning and sent thirty dozen eggs to Des Moines Orphans Home. The Hickory Grove Community meeting was held March 24 with music tap dancing and three small plays. Royal Neighbors set an April 4 meeting at Masonic Hall. The U T D Club elected officers Eula Kernen Ruth Stearns Leona Smalley. Semper Fidelis hosted by Mrs Wilbur O’Dell. The Wild Rose club met March 23 with eighteen members six guests and a riddle. Harold Beery honored with a shower.
Local social notes record Pal o mine club hosting a pot luck dinner with two guests, a M E Aid Society gathering, and a Woman's Study Club program. Neighbors delivered well filled baskets for a birthday surprise for Mrs Horace Beemer, with kin and friends sharing meals and cake at multiple Bedford Gravity area residences.
Gravity School seniors traveled to Bedford on Thursday for a group portrait titled Pow Wow. They also report near completion of a Typing Book and practice in shorthand dictation and transcription on the typewriter.
The Junior sextet and soloists Dorothy Lewis and Edythe Ledgerwood placed second at Mount Ayr, not earning a district bid but signaling brighter prospects for next year. Sophomore and junior teams clash for class basketball title as juniors vie for typing certificates and pins. Eldon Keith was absent Monday.
Freshman class held a Friday night party in the school gymnasium with ice cream and cookies provided. A few attendees reported enjoying the treats and the casual social gathering to close the week.
Sixth grade studies Life on the Frontier while eighth grade covers How the Industrial Revolution changed workers. Seventh grade explores How America has been peopled by immigrants. Top spellers earn 100: Betty Lou Parks, Audrey Joslyn and Bonnietta Lambley.
Several pupils were absent this week due to odds. Mildred Biggerstaff Patricia Hayes Annabelle Stephens Greta Biggerstaff Margaret Churchill Lois Marie Parks and Florie Dougherty each earned 100 percent in spelling last week. First and second graders Beverly Morley Quentin King Bonnie Humphrey Joan Ledgerwood Charles Alexander Hazel Biggerstaff Francis Gaddis Robert Crossley also received 100 percent in the spelling test on Friday.
Local residents including Mrs. Fred Shafar Mrs. Frank Oxley Jr and Miss Jane West attended a 4 H meeting in Atlantic on Tuesday. Numerous visits and family gatherings followed across Greenfield Conway Bedford Stennett and Des Moines with relatives and neighbors sharing weekends visits and celebrations.
Mrs. Henry Frost, 84, a Gravity resident and Guss cemetery burial pioneer, died after living in Gravity for two years. She mothered three children Meda Clement of Canada Fred Frost and Alta Shum, reared four granddaughters, and funeral services were conducted by Rev W F Eiggerstaff at the Free Methodist Church Gravity.
Mrs Max Webb entertained the Helping Hand Club Friday afternoon with Mrs Frank Webb as guest. Mrs John Spring won the contest. The hostess served refreshments. Guests included Mr and Mrs John Spring Margalene Mrs Viola Branan Miss Wilma Van Ausdall Miss Cleo Nelle Van Ausdall and Miss Dorothy Weseen at dinner.
Social notes list Sunday visits across Villisca and nearby towns. In gifts of care, Mrs Springs and Mrs Branan celebrate birthdays with relatives including Rock and Lewis family members. Cattle shipped to Omaha show regional activity as residents travel for events and errands.
Maple Grove church plans officer elections for the Sunday School session on April 2 and a preaching service at 7 30 PM by Rev Paul Barton of Hopkins. The public is invited to both events as part of community support. Nearby Eagle School hosts an Eagle Community meeting on March 31 amid local social activity.
Bayfield residents visited friends and family across Hazel Dell in a sequence of Sunday outings and gatherings. amid the chatter are quoted early 19th century Sabbath edicts prohibiting travel, cooking, lodging, kissing children, and dance or music, with penalties and tax mentions for offending.
A glimpse of Connecticut blue laws describes restrictions on voting and civil participation. It notes that freemen must be church members and dissenters could be barred from elections or receiving food and lodging, reflecting the Dominion’s enforced worship.
Joseph Tremble Harvey born April 7, 1853 in Hermon Ohio died March 18 1939 in Sterling Colorado at 85. He married Mary Isabel Hannah March 28 1875 near Bedford Taylor County Iowa. They lived on farms in several communities, moved to Colorado in 1909 filed on a homestead south of Fort Morgan, then Fort Morgan, later Sterling. They observed their sixtieth anniversary in 1935. Mrs Harvey died three years earlier. He was a Methodist and ill after March 12, removed to a son’s home.
A hospital admission on Tuesday preceded the death on the following Saturday. Surviving are six children including Mrs. Wess Hardin of Colbert Wash and Mrs. H A Reynolds of Tingley Iowa, Robert Harvey of Clearfield, Ray Harvey of Barnard Missouri, and Mrs. C & L Hayne and C C Harvey of Sterling Colorado. Also twenty seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. One sister Myra Gray of Blockton and brothers Earl Harvey of Blockton Will Harvey of Conway Frank Harvey and Milton Harvey of Blockton survive. Funeral services were held in Sterling Colorado Tuesday March 21 conducted by Rev R Cameron Presbyterian pastor. Burial was in Sterling. Attendees from this county included Mrs E Gray Blockton Will Harvey Conway and Mr and Mrs Robert Harvey and Mr and Mrs Forest Harvey of Clearfield.
Mrs Nettie Thompson Barnum born November 30 1886 in Liken County Ohio died March 22 1939 in Taylor County aged 52. She married Loa S Thompson in 1919 and James W Lynch in 1916 producing five children with two daughters and three sons. son Drexell Thompson of Bedford and daughters Mrs Fisher Tryon Fairplay Colorado and Mrs Loyd Barnes Blockton survive. One grandson James La May Tryon of Fairplay Colorado also survives. Funeral at Walker and Shum Friday conducted by Rev C Max Buck burial in Fairview cemetery.
