Bedford flood control project nears completion on 102 River
Heavy rains in the Bedford area caused no flood damage along the East Fork of the 102 River. The U S Army Corps of Engineers reports the project is about 90 percent complete as of June 16 and expected to finish in late August. Local officials and 28 property owners express appreciation for the flood protection, with key involvement from City Attorney James A. Lucas and Guy Young. The project enlarges and straightens 17 440 feet of the river east of Bedford, providing partial protection to municipal and commercial areas and nearby farmland. Federal funding and local cooperation total about 1 1 million, with Bedford contributing 29 500. The project follows Flood Control Act guidelines that allow up to 1 million for small local projects. Construction is by Clark Construction Co of Kansas City, with Perry as resident engineer. The area previously faced a 1960 flood that peaked at 5 400 cfs. current efforts aim to prevent similar damage.
