Improvements For Three Fires Park
Returning campers and visitors to the Lake of Three Fires near Bedford will note many improvements at the Iowa park since last summer. Parking near the shelter area expanded to handle 80 to 100 more cars, with a new rock-edged roadway to the grass lot. The overflow camping area was enlarged to accommodate 40 extra units, and road repairs in the camping zone create space for 125 to 150 units, not including overflow. Tree planting on newly acquired south and west land continues, including 88 acres bought from Dean Thomas in May 1966 and about 160 acres from Clair Souder in March 1966. Additional plantings flank the conservation officer’s residence and beach. Twenty new anchored park stoves bring the total to about 380, mostly in camping areas, and 30 new picnic tables bring totals to 272. Fire-tool caches were placed for grass-fire safety. Electric hookups for 32 camping units were installed in July 1966. Kitchen remodeling occurred at the caretaker’s home.

Taylor County Soil Conservation District offers information and tours for campers and urban visitors at Bedford on Main Street. The Blockton Watershed project near Bedford includes 10 completed dams serving 18 720 acres with volumes up to 112 acre feet, funded by the Soil Conservation Service under Public Law 566.

Taylor County Fair in Bedford July 19 to 23
The Taylor County Fair at the Bedford fairgrounds runs July 19 through 23 with Campers and Three Fires visitors invited. The program features swine and sheep judging, pony and running races, horse and cattle judging, harness racing, stage shows, livestock parades, tractor pulling, stock car racing, and midways entertainment by Weaver Shows. Gate admission is $1 for adults, grandstand free, children 10-14 pay 35 cents.
