William C Fleming Dies Aged Clearfield Native
Former Clearfield resident William C Fleming died Monday in Kewanee Illinois. Funeral services were held at the Clearfield Methodist Church with Rev J C Turner officiating. Burial followed in Conway cemetery. Fleming, born May 22 1849 in Luthersburg, grew to manhood in Stark County Illinois and settled near Clearfield Iowa in 1874. He married Amy Chittenden in 1879. she died in 1920. He was the last survivor of his nine siblings and spent years in Illinois after his wife’s death.

The Downing family lost their large farm home southwest of New Market when a blaze about eleven Saturday night destroyed the building. Sparks from the chimney were blamed. Clarinda firefighters arrived too late to save much, with only some first floor furniture saved. Insurance partly covered the loss and the Downings have moved to New Market.
