Richard Ovington of Iowa placed fourth in the National spelling contest in Washington with his sisters and grandmother visiting the Capitol. The House passed a bill to add over a billion dollars in monetary silver with silver certificates legal tender. Nebraska’s Governor Shallenberger, on Ways and Means, said the plan would raise silver to one fourth of the total monetary stock. The measure requires Treasury to boost silver to about two billion two hundred million, implying significant silver purchases. The speech argued the bill would place silver on par with gold in market terms.
