Terrible Adventure on Hecla Volcano in Scotland
A fragmentary narrative recounts Mr. Carl Leviman’s ascent of Mount Hecla in Scotland just before a hypothetical eruption in 1845. He details icy desolation, a lava basin, and a perilous descent into a hot chasm, aided by a faithful guide who returns to save him. The tale ends with an escape to safety and a surreal postscript about a Confederate-soldier encounter and odd anecdotes.
