Baytown Water Reopens After Crisis Averted

Power restoration fixed Trinity River pumping stations in Baytown ending four day reliance on emergency reserves. Mayor Mundinger said the city is not at risk of running dry as residents cut water use since Saturday. Chambers County Officials Meet President Over Rita Aid

Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia joined 11 other county judges and mayors to meet President Bush in Beaumont on Tuesday. He said the area was declared 100 percent disaster area, enabling reimbursement for necessary relief spending. Governor Perry attended. the session was described as low key and informal.

CenterPoint aims to restore Baytown power by Friday

CenterPoint Energy officials say crews are working around the clock to fix outages blamed on a damaged pole in Julie Ann Villa. A snapped pole, repaired with a splint after a teen crash, was back in issue when Rita struck, cutting power for 17,142 customers across Baytown and nearby areas. Citywide restoration is projected by Friday as crews progress daily.

Exxon Mobil Baytown complex resumes startup after shutdown

Exxon Mobil Baytown, including a refinery, chemical plant, olefins plant and plastics plant, resumes startup after an integrated shutdown. Treacy Roberts says startup is sequential and safety minded with in-plant personnel returning to work. No injuries reported, no severe damage found, terminals and pipelines reopened and refinery delivering gasoline. Flaring observed but within environmental guidelines to minimize emissions.

Baytown approves 85.2 million budget with single nay

Baytown City Council approves an 85.2 million dollar budget for 2005 06 at a rescheduled meeting with councilman Mercedes Renteria III voting no citing excessive spending The tax rates for city property water and sewer were approved to take effect in October Renteria urged fiscal restraint and pointed to not lowering the tax rate despite expected higher appraisal rolls.

Students Return to Class Across Area Districts

Several area schools and districts reopen this week after Hurricane Rita, with Crosby ISD and Lee College resuming classes today. Crosby Superintendent Don Hendrix called the district lucky as evacuees and staff return, while other districts plan phased reopenings as campuses reestablish operations.
