Baytown residents inch back to life but face two days of water supply left. Power to Trinity River pumping stations remains off and officials do not know when it will be restored. Assistant City Manager Kelvin Knauf urged continued conservation and avoiding laundry, lawn watering, car washing and pool filling.
The district said school would reopen on September 29 after delaying from Monday and Tuesday to allow families and staff time to return home and prepare for the reopening. Many employees and students had evacuated to other areas, prompting the extended pause.
The American Red Cross partners with Chambers County to establish a shelter at White's Park in Anahuac for residents affected by Hurricane Rita. Volunteers are urged to help and generators are sought to power lift pumps, with power restoration delaying sewage flow.
John Tucker, long a Baytown philanthropist and ExxonMobil veteran, died Sunday in Austin after a cancer battle. He helped raise 1 million for Lee College scholarships with Reggie Brewer in 1993 and founded the Friends of Lee College in 1986, growing to over 400 members by 2000. Tucker was Baytown Sun Citizen of the Year in 1999.
Baytown officials say federal aid will cover most Rita cleanup costs as damage is less severe than anticipated. FEMA officials were on standby as Baytown filled out federal paperwork to seek reimbursement for expenses. More than 700 federal search and rescue teams were on standby Monday.
Baytown residents face limited shopping hours as both Kroger locations operate 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. due to staffing shortages. Stores remain open and ready to serve while recruitment continues to restore overnight service.
