Gun Control Bill OK'd By Senate Reflects NRA Pressure
Washington The Senate passed a gun control bill that would ban mail order sales of rifles and shotguns. It differs from the House version mainly in penalties for federal crimes with a gun and for ammunition sales. The bill heads to a joint conference with the House, then back to both chambers before the White House review. The Kennedy assassination spurred Johnson proposals for universal gun registration and licensing, which were defeated. NRA calls the failure a victory for the American people.
