Baytown voters face a Saturday referendum on a $50 monthly pay raise for police and fire personnel. Absentee votes were light, with 15 cast. total turnout may under 2,500 of 14,000 eligible. Balloting runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimates show broader city salary increases possible if the measure passes.

The Lee College Community Loan Fund drive for 3500 was announced Friday by Roy ve Comeaux president of the organization. The campaign closed with four student loans awarded for the 1965 66 school year bringing total grants to ten since the fund began in spring 1964. Funds now stand at 70500 and Baytown residents are credited for support and the work of Joe Steele McDonald as membership drive chairman. A student who received a loan in 1964 has since completed his James and received a diploma this summer. The revolving fund aids Lee College graduates and others with suitable qualifications to finish college. Primary requirements are confidence in prospects of success loan committee approval and Baytown school district residency.
Lee College board hears projected growth from Dean Walter Rundell. Enrollment is expected to exceed 2000 this year, 2881 by 1963, and 5105 by 1974 under a 10 percent growth scenario. Plans include a new academic building with 22 classrooms by 1965, a women’s gym, expanded cafeteria and parking along Gulf, with ditch filling proposed to create space.
Mrs. Ann Virginia Kimbrough 76 of Bay Bayou Blvd Cedar Bayou died Thursday night in a Baytown hospital after 11 years in the area. Funeral arrangements are pending with Earthman Funeral Home and Kilpatrick Kingsworth in Rundell Texas. Survivors include husband Ernest G. Kimbrough, daughter Mrs. Alfred E. Cooling, two brothers Walter Rice and Cecil Rice, sister Mrs. G. G. Poster and five grandchildren.
The REL band under Director Charles Forque will march 290 members onto Rice Stadium for the Owls first game of the season against Louisiana Tech at 7 20 p m Harriet Sander Drum Major and Theresa Nelson assistant drum major will guide a combined junior senior and sophomore unit The two seniors are active in church youth groups and community clubs with Nelson a Girls State delegate and both planning to attend Lee College after graduation

Frank Huebner of the Texas Highway Department says Decker Drive traffic will be divided for 1 to weeks or two months while work continues. The north lane is closed for about three quarters of a mile of paving removal, with completion targeted in 2% months and a potential award of the Bayway Drive to Interstate 10 contract in two to three months. Phase II street work on Felton, Hemphill, Texas Avenue to Defee East, and Defee traffic restrictions are noted along with Bayshore Drive fill progress and South Burnet base material completion.
