Galveston shows tourism and redevelopment rebounding five years after Hurricane Ike, with beaches replenished and homes rebuilt though population remains down about 11,000. Mayor Lewis Rosen and officials say the city is recovering, while construction continues across Southeast Texas. Ike struck near Galveston on Sept 13, 2008.
James Ward, 39, marks the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Ike in a one bedroom FEMA trailer after his Baytown home was destroyed. The 1999 purchase, high voltage electrical work for ExxonMobil, and the widespread damage from surge and wind left his three bedroom house unlivable with walls gone and contents scattered, as neighbors also faced heavy losses. Baytown Meals on Wheels, in its 35th year, serves nearly 300 seniors with hot weekday meals. Volunteer and paid drivers deliver meals citywide to recipients aged 60 and older who cannot cook. To apply or ask questions call 281-427-2145. no charge to participants. Faith Presbyterian Church provides space for meal distribution coordination.
