Dora Sweeps Florida Aims At Georgia By Red Siller

Dora the hurricane plowed across northern Florida smashing St Augustine and Jacksonville with fierce winds and high tides. It moved west toward the Panhandle and north toward the Atlantic coast threatening Georgia South Carolina and the Gulf coast. Officials warned of 10 to 15 inches of rain in parts of Georgia and northern Florida with widespread flooding and power outages in Jacksonville and St Augustine. Emergency powers were sought to declare a disaster area as damage runs into tens of millions.

Rusk Faults Goldwater Seal on Foreign Policy

Secretary of State Dean Rusk said Goldwater’s foreign policy statements show a basic lack of understanding of the president’s responsibilities in war and peace. He noted Goldwater warned of crises before the election and mused Cuba as a possible flashpoint, while ridiculing claims about Indonesia and Congo. First day fall term LC enrollment hits 529

Registration at Lee College continued on Thursday with 529 students signing up on Wednesday. School Board Set for Audit Report Discussions

Two special school board meetings were scheduled with one closed to the public at 6 p.m. and the other open at 7:30 p.m. Supt. George Gentry said Charles W. Suesse of Hawthorn and Suesse will present recommendations on changes in school district business office operations. Suesse has studied procedures for months and the closed session will discuss personnel. Auditors and board committees have been streamlining accounting for more than a year.

Boys Facing Auto Theft Charges Disappear Again

Two Baytown youths, aged 14 and 15, who last July eluded police after a 36 hour East Texas car theft spree returning four stolen vehicles, again disappeared. They were due before Harris County Probation Department juvenile court for charges of auto theft and related felonies. Police noted prior thefts included four cars, a billfold theft from Memorial Stadium, and a Holiday Inn car theft. A report also lists a reel and reel valued at $62 stolen from Terrell Baker’s garage. Local officers investigated disturbances and public drunkenness arrests.

City to Okay Record Budget in Baytown

Baytown City Council is set to approve a budget exceeding 2.9 million at a public hearing at city hall. The meeting will also include adoption of next year’s tax rate and a proposal to buy 19 walkie talkie radios from Baytown Refinery’s Type OW and Refining Co.

A small gray fox wandered into a garage near Indiana and Ohio Streets at about 3:15 pm Wednesday. Officers identified it as a domestic pet and urged owner pickup as residents reported multiple calls about a roaming fox in the area.

Charles F. Jones of Baytown has been elected president of Humble Oil and Refining Company. He succeeds 121K Jamieson who resigns to join Standard Oil of New Jersey. Jones joined Humble as a Baytown refinery engineer in 1937 and rose through engineering economics and manufacturing roles. He holds BA and MA in chemistry and is a registered professional engineer. He and his wife Edith Temple Houston have two children.

Senate cloture defeat stalls Supreme Court reapportion case
