Useless Plants Drain Western Water Supply Study Warns
The Geological Survey reports phreatophytes waste vast western water, estimated at 20 to 25 million acre-feet annually, with 11 million acres affected. Major culprits include saltcedar, mesquite, greasewood, and saltgrass, threatening Lake Mead storage and the Colorado River flow. Two remedies flagged: pumping to lower water tables or replacing water-wasters with economically valuable vegetation.
