A minor blaze at Humble Oil and Refining Co. Baytown plant early Wednesday hit the hydro cracker when a bearing box on a compressor overheated. Workers extinguished it before firefighters arrived. damage was minor and no injuries were reported.
Retired Baptist preacher the Rev. MM Godfrey and his wife observed their 70th anniversary in Baytown Texas on a Tuesday. He, 89, and she, not yet 89 until October, recalled meeting in Lorena near Waco. The couple have four children and pastored churches in Houston San Angelo and Conroe. Baytown schools enrolled 12,309 students on the first day of instruction up 491 from 1966. High schools accounted for most of the rise with 326 more students than last year in two high schools Robert E. Lee and Ross Sterling. Enrollment across five junior schools and 13 elementary schools also rose, with special education classes up by five. Total figures show elementary 5,089 junior 3,199 and high 3,812 students.

A three month campaign to recruit 500 boys into the Boy Scouts of America units in the Baytown area will be launched at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Methodist Church. Baytown area leaders and Scouts will discuss the three programs cub scouts boy scouts and explorers with school night meetings planned at each district school.
Seven inch rains ripped Fan nin County in North Texas early today flooding Bonham and forcing evacuation of at least 20 people. Washington AP The Johnson Administration nears completion of a tax reform package covering estate and gift taxes for the first time in 25 years. The plan is unlikely to cut the oil depletion allowance, keeping current tax burdens and avoiding a Treasury windfall. It targets exemptions, foundations, churches, and industrial development bonds, with no admin help to lower depletion.
U S Steel will receive Lake Livingston water to operate the Texas Works plant near Baytown. The new plate mill will use millions of gallons daily, with site prep underway. Mayor Lovie Welch said the contract, negotiated with Houston, could yield about 500000 to 2 million dollars yearly as the site expands, while usage may reach 120 to 140 million gallons per day.
