Centennial celebration at New Waverly Catholic Church

Sales Tax Protest Planned by City Group

A 16 member Citizens Against City Sales Tax Committee formed at Roseland Park Pavilion to oppose a September 23 election on a city sales tax. Reynolds named chairman and his wife Ruth Reynolds secretary. Absentee voting runs at city hall 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Sept. 20 with registration certificate required. City Councilman Ted Kloesel questions the tax’s effectiveness and the revenue range of 400 000 to 800 000 dollars.

Dirksen In Good Condition After Lung Surgery

Senator Everett M. Dirksen 73 was reported in satisfactory condition after doctors removed a growth from his right lung at Walter Reed Hospital. Aides said no immediate word on cancer, and his office noted no evidence of tumor spread with the operation deemed successful.

The Illegal Drug Use Committee recommends dedicating at least one full time narcotics investigator, plus 24 hour on call availability, a city wide education program in schools churches and communities, and teacher training to recognize drug use.

Inquest Into Kopechne Death Blocked by Kennedy Lawyers

A Boston AP report notes an inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne’s death tied to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was blocked by his lawyers likely delaying the proceeding by two weeks or more. A Pennsylvania judge rejected a bid to dismiss an autopsy petition and a hearing by the full state Supreme Court was ordered to review constitutional issues.
