Elizabeth Toomey reports in New York that women vary in size beyond standard even numbers. Since WWII, sizes include half, petite, junior, plus, and tall categories with overlapping definitions. Manufacturers push tags like 14 plus and 16-5 to address fuller busts and waists, while some women resist half sizes. Peg Newton helped popularize tall-girl clothing, leading to shops offering extended fits and longer waists and sleeves.
