Lee College regents unanimously approve a $33 million budget and choose an architectural firm to design the performing arts center. The budget rises 3.7 percent from last year, per Steve Evans, college dean of financial services, during a public hearing. No members of the board are quoted beyond that.
Public hearing covered campus budget plans including a 1.2 million raise pool for full-time staff with a 5 percent across the board and a step increase. President Martha Ellis said elevated pay positions Lee College among the state’s top 10 for faculty compensation. After two years of extensive upgrades the elevator to the San Jacinto Monument observation deck resumes service. The 570 foot war memorial honors the 1936 Battle of San Jacinto and Texas independence. Funding of 2.14 million in emergency funds was approved in 2005 to complete restoration led by Texas Parks and Wildlife and contractor KBR.
Refineries along the Gulf Coast plan large capacity increases by 2010, led by Motiva in Port Arthur. The region, damaged by Rita and Katrina, faces questions of risk as expansions aim to add up to 1.9 million barrels daily, about 11 percent of current output.
Exxon Mobil runs the United States largest refinery in Baytown. The Baytown area began as the Humble and Refining Co. site that built the original refinery and later merged with Goose Creek and Pelly to form the modern city. See Exxon page 2.
