Old Timers Good Golfers Long Ball Was Hit Twenty Years Ago
HAL WOOD PORTLAND, ORE., Sept. 1 A Tong and limber Dot Kirby, former National Amateur champion from Atlanta, Ga., has watched golf long and seen talent rise and fall. She says the game is as good as twenty years ago, with more players, longer courses, and better equipment. Virginia Van Wie, who tried in 1935, would still be a champion, she asserts, noting the modern long ball and strong juniors. Kirby sees Barbara Romack and Mickey Wright as top prospects, with 16 year old Barbara Snook showing promise. Dorothy Kirby plans to try for match play at the Nationals next summer in Rhode Island.
