Window operation offers sight to the blind nationwide
Dr Louis Girard of Baylor University College of Medicine disclosed a new artificial cornea technique at a news conference. He said 60 implants in 34 years have helped about half of recipients regain sight, with success in cases of chemical burns, injuries, diseases, or congenital cornea defects. The procedure, taking up to 1.5 hours, uses a clear plastic lens with mesh projections held by tissue from the donor eye or other sources.
