POW Release Brings 36 Hour Cease Fire
SAIGON AP The United States and North Vietnam declared a 36 hour ceasefire in 38 square miles along the North Vietnamese coast for the release today of 14 North Vietnamese seamen captured more than two years ago. The ceasefire and release of prisoners, with the withdrawal of the battleship New Jersey from off the coast, increased speculation of progress in Paris talks. U.N. diplomats note Vietnam may aim for peace before the next U.S. administration takes office Jan. 21. Meanwhile American air strikes continued below the 19th parallel and 24 Americans were killed when a C47 crashed in the central highlands. An F4 Phantom and a rescue helicopter were downed. crews were recovered. The release is described as an act of goodwill and may lead to further prisoner releases. The local cease-fire ran from midnight Sunday to noon Tuesday in waters off North Vietnam near Vinh.
