Texas waterways deemed unsafe for fishing and swimming
The Associated Press reports Environment Texas says more than half of Texas waterways are unsafe for fishing or swimming 35 years after the Clean Water Act. In 2005 Texas posted the most permit violations among major facilities, with 318 facilities exceeding limits at least once, led by arsenic and cyanide pollution. Harris County was the worst county for permit exceedances. The group urges renewal efforts and notes EPA data under a FOIA request. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality dismisses the claims as dated and reiterates protection of waterways as a priority.
