Portrait artist honors fallen Texas soldiers at gallery opening
At the gallery opening, artist Ken Pridgeon unveiled portraits of Texas soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Family members of Lance Corporal Anthony Aguirre received a portrait as the larger wall piece honors his memory. Aguirre died just before turning 21, after staying with his platoon to complete the deployment. The event featured veterans and family members, with City Councilman Brandon Capetillo present among supporters. Pridgeon, age 79, has spent 15 months painting these memorials, giving large works to galleries and smaller keepsakes to families without charge, funded by his own Social Security. He began the project at home, then moved to a storefront gallery, Portrait of a Warrior Memorial Art Gallery, inviting all to visit and hear the soldiers’ stories.
