In Houston the Greater Houston College Commission proposal to form a junior college district failed. About 27,500 votes for and 31,000 against. The plan would have covered 13 districts in Harris County and one in Fort Bend. Lee College and San Jacinto voters did not participate. Tax and bond measures were also defeated, with Cypress-Fairbanks Houston Huffman Klein Tomball opposing all, while Humble Northeast Houston Spring Fort Bend and Spring Branch supported the district but opposed tax issues.

At 9 30 p m Saturday Frank Xavier Benavides 2 percent was struck by a car at 528 W Main while talking with a friend. He was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital and later released. Benavides told Baytown police he leaned on an auto talking with Olga Pantoja 1132 Cypress when a vehicle driven by Genaro Gallage Serna 166 W Humbie tried to squeeze by two parked cars. Benavides was struck after partially blocking Serna's path. Pantoja charged with lack of driver's license and double parking. Serna charged with negligent collision. Patrolman W R Dabney investigated. JOHN M HEARD awarded Chartered Life Underwriter designation at National Conferment Exercises in Philadelphia. Heard a 1961 Baylor graduate. He began as management trainee at Pacific Mutual Life Insurance and later became Oak Agency district manager in 1964.
