Longshoremen Strike Rocks Atlantic Gulf Ports
NEW YORK AP The longshoremen's union struck Atlantic and Gulf ports at 12 am today but President Johnson moved to cut short the walkout under Taft Hartley provisions. The ILA ordered 75,000 dockworkers to halt work after negotiations with shippers broke down. A three man board will hear today with action by Wednesday possibly leading to a cooling off period. About 160 ships faced disruption from Searsport Maine to Brownsville Texas. Union president Thomas W Gleason warned of an injunction later in the week and said the strike would continue until the government intervenes. The dispute centers on wages pensions and other fringe benefits and a 2080 hour annual work guarantee sought by the ILA. The White House said the strike could cost about 70 million daily in trade and wage losses around 2 million daily.
