Forty nine Baytown teachers were approved for level II placement increasing the district’s annual income supplement to 1,500 each and bringing total recipients to 672. Assistant Superintendent Barry Nettles said others need paperwork to qualify. A seven mile river of glowing lava from Kilauea Volcano destroyed nine houses and severed a highway as it moved toward the ocean. Scientist Tom Wright of the U S Geological Survey said eruption remains strong and readings show no change. Lava reached within 600 to 700 feet of the sea, park ranger Mardie Lane reported.
