Baytown government will close Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Police Fire and EMS staff stay on duty for emergencies while other departments are on-call. Garbage collection pauses Thursday with Friday resume. unserviced Thursday trash to be collected Monday.
Baytown Community Alliance plans the annual Thanksgiving Day feast at the Baytown Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an expected 7000 locals served. Last year 5000 meals were distributed, aided by organizer Marsha Burton and a team including Steve Burton, Gina Rivon, Garry Brumback, Stephen DonCarlos, Shawn Cochran and Rolando Valdez.
Two hundred dinners were made possible by Ross S. Sterling High School Teen Leadership II students and instructor Beth Woods. The drive involved the whole school, staff sponsors, and student volunteers who collected food items and cash, prepared baskets, and added a $10 grocery gift card with each delivery to families named by counselors, Love INC, and BRAC.
The Baytown Family YMCA launches its 1st Annual Holiday Gift Giving Program benefiting 90 children at the Oaks on Baytown Apartments. Residents submit three wish list items and three needs, with sponsors selecting from the lobby tree by December 4 and returning gifts by December 15.
Cedar Bayou Junior School held a two round volleyball fundraiser drawing nearly 1000 students who paid one dollar each. Girls won both rounds 25 21 and 28 20 in a charity match for Christmas gifts aiding needy children, raising about 1000 dollars. Bill Ehlig praised the student council for organizing the event.
The Baytown Junior League invites applications for Christmas toys from Goodfellows. Applications are accepted at the Baytown Community Center on December 2 and December 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tax free donations may be mailed to Goodfellows at P.O. Box 425, Baytown, TX 77522.
