Longtime Refiner H A Halsey Retires After 47 Years
Harold A Halsey retires from Baytown Humble Standard refinery after 47 years eight months and six days, tracing back to a 1905 vacation job with Standard of New Jersey. A native of Elizabeth New Jersey, he settled in Baytown in 1912, served in World War I, and helped build the Baytown plant in 1929. His son Harold Jr. also works at Baytown, and the family has a long legacy with Standard and Humble noting multiple generations of service. He plans to remain in Baytown and encourage schooling for youth.

Grass Fires Keep Firemen On Run
Bastown firemen were kept busy over the weekend with the annual fall menace grass fires. Two of the worst occurred in the 200 block of West Main and in a large pasture off North Main between Cedar Bayou road and Pali Pati addition. No property damage was reported. The West Main fire occurred Sunday and the Fair Park area fire Saturday. The report said the fire near Fair Park burned off a large pratute.

San Jacinto Memorial Hospital Reports Nine Month Surplus
San Jacinto Memorial Hospital announced a nine month period ending Sept 30 showed a surplus of 23852.94 over expenses. Joe Reid president of the board said the hospital will shift its fiscal year from calendar to nine month terms and has hired Lowell Lammers to study possible expansion as crowding continues. Total income for nine months was 466.45 with operating cost at 997.60 plus setup 40161.18.

Funeral services were held in La Porte for Gerald Wayne Florance age 2 who drowned after his tricycle tipped into a private pool on the family yard off Highway 146. Calder Ewing officiated. burial followed in Houston. Survivors include parents Mr. and Mrs. R. Glen Florance and several siblings.

Maryland Governor Theodore R. McKeldin ordered an immediate end to racial segregation in the Maryland National Guard. 21 Meet Violent Deaths In Texas Weekend Tragedies
United Press reports at least 21 people died violently in Texas over the weekend. Twelve were killed in traffic accidents and nine in other causes including drownings and homicides.
