Twenty one Gander seniors, led by Sophomore QB Lucas Vegas, bid farewell to Port Arthur before 10 000 Memorial Stadium fans Friday night. The Ganders met their 10th foe of the year and conquered 15-7 in a hard fought home clash.
Anton Smajstria a Robert E Lee halfback underwent surgery Saturday morning at Lilie-Duke hospital for a hernia from a Friday night blow. Doctors said the operation was successful and he also had his appendix removed. He should return to athletics within three weeks. Smajstria is the sole returning member of the world champion schoolboy mile relay team. The piece notes his role as a versatile Gander back in a hard-fought loss to Port Arthur, with strong performances by Gates Lochridge and Don St Clair, though Port Arthur’s Gonsoulin and Landnim also stood out.

Baytown lumber dealer Elmer Gray announced a lease of a 32,000 acre tract from Humble Oil Company near San Port, spanning from the Galveston Freeway to Webster and Seabrook. The land, used for hay production and farming, includes six thousand acres of hay meadows and stretches toward La Porte and La Rose Point, reportedly tied to Mampte Git and Refining Co for 14 years.
Harris County seeks remand to state court for injunction against Tennessee Gas Transmission Co over crossing of county roads. Tennessee Gas counters in federal court arguing state permits burden interstate commerce. County Commissioner Ramsey started action after discovering a gas line crossing Morgans Paint Baytown road without county approval.
Liberty Texas hosts a house raising to provide a new home for widow Mrs Smith and eight of her nine children after the family tragedy last October. About 30 volunteers build the house begun by Alfred Smith before his drowning. Local donors have contributed 4273 dollars and Gene and George Swan direct carpenters to finish the project with Rotary and Lions serving the workers. Mr and Mrs Houllian, parents of six, are destitute after the father’s long illness. Baytown hosts an appreciation picnic for Congressman Albert Thomas at the National Guard armory on Saturday at 4 pm.
