Hartman named to state newspaper hall of fame
The Texas Newspaper Foundation announced former Baytown Sun Publisher and civic leader Fred Hartman is inducted into the Texas Newspaper Foundation Hall of Fame for 2014. Hartman began as a sportswriter, rose to editor and publisher of the Baytown Sun, and later became a newspaper owner under Carriage Walls and Southern Newspapers Inc. See Hartman page 5A.

Roadside memorials mark lasting aid for grieving families
On North Main Street toward I 10 a large construction site for the new Alamo Elementary School sits beside a hidden orange cross, mailbox and triangular sign at the southwest corner. Baytown explores new drilling rules and hearings
Baytown plans two public hearings at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and December 17 at Baytown City Hall to consider amendments to the Unified Land Development Code for oil and gas drilling in Goose Creek. Foothills Texas sought a permit to drill inactive and new wells, facing zoning restrictions after Goose Creek was rezoned to livable centers. The company would need a zoning change to heavy industrial, risking repayment of mineral rights investments if denied.

Brittany Partin once thrived as a student athlete at Ross S. Sterling High in Baytown, earning a college volleyball scholarship. A year after graduation she began suffering chronic headaches and vision sensitivity due to a tumor in the brain stem, ending her athletic career and daily independence. Her mother recalls the sudden shift from scholarship to hospital papers as Partin faced the fight against a Pilocytic Astrocytoma in the fourth ventricle.

Dust dispute over HPP facility despite TCEQ no violation
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ruled HPP Materials did not violate air quality rules after a July 5 dust complaint at the Royal Purple Raceway Park nearby. The conflict continues as Royal Purple Raceway, Century Asphalt Materials, and HPP pursue lawsuits and a permit challenge over a concrete crushing operation. TCEQ found no dust leaving the site or impacting adjacent property during a Sept. 12 investigation, while authorities noted the Aug. 30 filing of the complaint and prior non violations in earlier probes.
