Baytown resident Teddy Purdy, hospitalized in New Orleans since being struck by a car on Oct. 20, moved from intensive care and is slated for leg surgery as condition improves. His family awaits release.
A weather note forecasts clear to partly cloudy skies through Friday with gradual warmups. In Baytown Thursday, the temperature range is expect ed to reach 34 to 85 degrees, with the morning low at 34 degrees.
Local paper reports Alma Morgan securing another golfing title amid scattered notes on contestants and casual mentions of Edna Borer Lyn Massey and Toby Sessions. The page also references a cooking book, a German movie reception, and various small items without cohesive plot or clear dates.
Some 36 Baytown police officers bought submachineguns on Oct 24 1984. The Baytown Police Association financed the purchases with officers paying the association for the weapons. Guns were bought from a firm in Alexandria Virginia and returned to the association if an officer did not pay. Officers leaving the force had their guns turned in and reimbursed. Prices ranged from 200 to 500 dollars each. City leaders questioned the need for such firearms and discussed an ordinance restricting city employees from owning equipment not legally available to others. Police Chief Blair Mann noted the guns were underwritten by the association and that he was not a member. Possession of machineguns is regulated by the U S Treasury Department.
Twenty seven men representing sixteen countries will conclude the 71st term of the School of Pipe Line Technology with a graduation banquet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Holiday Inn. The six week program is sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute, the Petroleum Extension Department of the University of Texas, Geo PICTURE on Page 24 and Lee College. It trains pipeline company engineers and technicians with training by Baytown companies and outside firms. The initiative began in 1956 through Walter Burdell, George H. Gentry and Nelson MecElroy. Key figures Freeman and Shell Pipe Line Co. have guided the course since its inception. James E. Conway was the first coordinator.
Baytown hosts twenty foreign students this Friday for a weekend of home stays. AFS chapter director Charles Tillery along with Ray Swofford and T L Doc Satterwhite arranged the visit. Students will stay with Robert E. Lee and Ross Sterling high schools families, tour Humble refinery, attend Chamber of Commerce talks, and be hosted by Lee Student Council at a pregame gathering.
The Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel Co plans a new steel processing and fabricating plant near Liberty, occupying up to 200 workers. The firm bought 50 acres four miles east of Liberty on Highway 90, near the proposed U S Steel mill site and Trinity River barge access. The site fronts on the Southern Pacific Railroad right of way, with tracks between the property and Highway 90. The company makes water tanks and petroleum production products, among others. Sale price of the Liberty property was not disclosed.
Fire crews were called to the 700 block of East Hunt when a car overturned early morning. Gas began spilling from the tank but did not ignite and no injuries were reported.
Thieves destroyed the safe and damaged the vault at Humble Employees Credit Union in Baytown, taking about 12,000 dollars. Police call it a professional job, occurring between 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday morning. The loss to the safe amounts to 3,548.28 dollars after checks with the bonding company.
United States opens its space program with an unmanned rocket firing along a suborbital path. The Air Force rocket then achieved orbit with four satellites aboard, including a payload of satellite decoys.
The Texas Employment Commission will continue TEC services in Baytown after the City Council approved rent for space. The office will operate Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Woodmen of the World Hall, with Pasadena as a backup if Baytown space isn’t available. Local business agents urged the city to keep the Baytown site, citing protests over discontinuation.
Citizens Savings and Loan plans a four day grand opening for its new building at the corner of Texas and Jones starting Monday. Festivities include daily gifts at 10 am 12 pm 2 30 pm and 5 pm with a prize drawing Thursday evening. The 20 000 square foot circular layout features a deposit island drive in window and 57 off street spaces.
U S Steel Texas Works manager Harry Spitz told a Baytown Rotary luncheon that problems delaying the Baytown mill are expected to be solved in weeks and construction could begin in 1967 with operations in 1969. He outlined plant visions, research emphasis, and a possible first unit, noting no U S brand steel has been made in Texas and that Baytown could become a major steel town without a mill for now.
Funeral services are planned for Army Private Jake A. Simmons 15 of Baytown killed while serving with the 251st Infantry in South Vietnam on October 2. The service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Part VII Lee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenn Walker officiating. His body arrived in Baytown at 1:30 a.m. Thursday and will lie in state until the service. Graveside rites with full military honors will follow at San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery. Simmons is survived by his sister Miss Glenda Simmons.
