Diplomas Awarded 405 Robert E. Lee Seniors

Robert E. Lee High School awarded diplomas to 405 seniors at Memorial Stadium in a night of honors. Valedictorian Harry Ehlig received the Balfour Plaque and the Daughters of the American Revolution Citizenship Award. Paul Comeaux, third in class, earned the R. B. Sparks Award and a slide rule from professional societies. National Merit finalists William Andrew McElhannon Jr. and Mary Jane Bickley also received scholarships.

Montgomery heads San Jacinto Methodist Hospital Board

Montgomery is the new president of San Jacinto Methodist Hospital Board of Trustees. The executive slate includes Gene Gillis as first vice president William Moseley as second vice president frank Turpin as treasurer Mrs Elmer Gray as secretary and James Harrop as outgoing president. Richard Strahan was re-elected to serve until 1972 and A N Nelsort Jr filled Roy Elms vacancy. Ministers elected include Rev Robert Jones Rev Bill Commer and Rev Leslie Le Grand. Theo Wilburn is a lifetime honorary trustee.

A public safety item was stolen from a car at the Humble Oil and Refining Co west gate lot. The entry damaged a passenger window. item value $140 and window damage about $10. Security Unit Study To Be Made By House

State Rep. Joel Allen announced the House passed a resolution to appoint an interim committee to study the need for maximum security units for the criminally insane in Texas metropolitan areas. The study, to be named by Speaker Gus Mutscher, would consider facilities in Houston possibly at the Texas Medical Center and report to the 62nd Legislature. The House also adopted a resolution to adjourn this session at midnight Saturday, sent to the Senate for concurrence with an expected next Tuesday conclusion.

Teacher Raise and Budget On Legislative Agenda

AUSTIN AP A teacher pay raise bill costing the state 61.9 million for the next school year and a 2.84 billion one year general appropriations bill were slated for expected legislative votes. Lt Gov Barnes and Speaker Mutscher indicated a late afternoon vote with possible Saturday delay. Senate approved the conference measure 30 to 1, while Barnes urged passage to avoid a 300 million tax. The total budget spans 2.84 billion from all funds, up from 2.55 billion this year.

Baytown Youth Begins Priesthood Study in Rome

Terry Brinkman 22 son of Gus and Mrs Brinkman leaves in August for Rome to complete priesthood studies. He graduated summa cum laude from University of St Thomas Houston and was chosen with another top student. He will study theology at Gregorian Institute, live at North American College, and be ordained after four to five years. The Galveston Diocese will fund his study and living costs. He attends St. Joseph Church under Msgr. Joseph O Sullivan.

Baytown Mayor’s Drug Traffic Committee Sets Monday Meeting

The Baytown citizens committee appointed by Mayor Glen Walker will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in City Hall to discuss narcotics issues. Chairman Jack Huron says weekly Monday meetings will occur in the city hall conference room with police briefings and coordination with other agencies. The group will seek school district input and aim to develop a citizen involvement program while producing a yearend report with recommendations to the city council. Members include Rick Peebles, Ray Tickner, Ron Lennard, Bill Darling, Mrs. R 1. Lawrence, Roy Williams, Carl Young, Leon Legler, and David Evans.

Crosby Water and Sewer Names Steering Chairman

Crosby restaurant owner O R Hilliard was named chairman of a steering committee to form the Crosby Water and Sewer Supply Corp. Crosby High School principal Robert Cunningham was elected secretary-treasurer. About 50 residents heard plans to build water and sewage systems, apply for an 850000 loan from the Farmers Home Administration, and purchase a private system for 80000 from T E Reidland. Engineers Rayburn Moore discussed plans. FHA official Etheridge projected action in 30 to 45 days. Membership goal is 500 with 50 dollar charter fee and monthly charges of 6 for water and 2 50 for sewer. Bill Garris and others joined the steering panel.

Talks On Ironworker Strike To Resume In Houston

Talks between ironworker union officials and contractors will resume at 1 p.m. Monday in Houston as efforts continue to settle the 57 day old strike. The Southeast Texas dispute delays school construction and commercial projects in Baytown while the Houston chapter of the Associated General Contractors and the Construction Employers Association of Texas rejected the union's proposed wage package. The union sought a 76 cent hourly hike for the first two years and a 1.90 increment in year three, totaling potential gains of 10,500 dollars in added wages for 2,000 hours per year, with a 6,000 dollar higher third year starting salary. Contractors offered to meet four demands, but the union did not answer. the four gains include larger foreman journeyman differentials, eliminating three wage differentials, and a time check provision for on and off the job times.
