Oil Industry More Able To Cope With Crisis Now
AP Oil WriterMAX B SKELTON Houston reports the world petroleum industry is better positioned to handle a Middle East emergency than in 1955. New North African production and U S surplus supplies mitigate shortages with jumbo tankers bypassing the Suez canal. Output in the Middle East rose to about 9 2 million barrels daily last year, while Libya and Algeria drive Africa’s surge. The United States boosted production to record levels in a 1996 emergency and Venezuela expanded reserves, signaling resilience against potential disruptions.

Melon Train Pickets Clash Amid Texas Ranger Watch
A train carrying Starr County melons moved toward markets as farm union pickets trailed for nine hours. Two women pickets stopped it briefly near Rio Grande City, sparking a management takeover. Texas Rangers and Missouri Pacific agents rode the train 73 miles to Harlingen. Union leader Bill Chandler called the action successful, and a protest rally in Rio Grande City was planned with student supporters joining from Dallas Austin and San Antonio. The siege has led to 43 arrests since harvest began, and senators pressed DPS head Col. Homer Garrison to withdraw Rangers from the dispute.
