Memorial Day Traffic Toll Tops 19 Along With Other Fatalities
United Press reports 37 people died violently over the four day Memorial Day weekend in Texas and nationwide 377 fatalities occurred. The Texas toll includes 19 traffic deaths 9 drownings a plane crash death and eight from other causes. Notable incidents include a Bryan two car collision killing math faculty member Dr. J H Binney and Terrell residents Mrs T T Tanner and Miss Eva Jemps. A San Antonio man 27 Walter L Michell shot himself during police checks for a stolen car. Several other deaths from falls hangings and a drilling rig accident are listed along with a projected 24 traffic deaths in Texas over the period.

Mrs Alicé Maude Lehde 54 a Baytown worker and Girl Scout leader was killed instantly when her car hit a tree near Fairfield.Her husband Eric Lehde is critically injured. The Lehde children learned of the death and plan to honor her memory with Scout activities. She led multiple troops including a Latin American unit and served on the Baytown Scout board.
