Coalition halts Najaf offensive as cleric offers end to standoff
The U S led coalition agreed to suspend offensive operations in Najaf after Iraqi leaders struck a deal with cleric Muqtada al Sadr to end the siege. The move follows heavy fighting around the Imam Ali Shrine and threats to Shiite leaders, including Governing Council member Salama al Khafaji who survived an assassination attempt. Three Marines were killed in Anbar as the city awaits a shift of sovereignty to a new Iraqi government.
