Chambers absentee voting set in county runoff races

Chambers County voters will pick a county judge and the Democratic nominee for Precinct 4 county commissioner in the June runoff. Absentee voting runs Wednesday through June 3. Incumbent Alma Turner faces Oscar Nelson. Turner had 1,575 votes to Nelson 1,435 in May.

Houston Ship Channel dredging plan to be discussed

Citizens may speak at a 6 p.m. Army Corps of Engineers hearing at the University of Houston Clear Lake auditorium about widening and deepening the Houston Ship Channel from 40 to 50 feet and 400 to 600 feet from Bolivar Roads to Boggy Bayou with further widening to Clinton Island Turning Basin. Plans include a deep draft channel at Galveston and spoil disposal 24 hours daily for eight years. Environmental impacts are to be studied by the EPA before final recommendations.

Baytown pupil to represent state at statue's unveiling

Jessica Bagwell, seven year old Harlem Elementary first grader, will travel with her teacher Susan Minix to New York July 3 through 6 to represent Texas at the unveiling of the renovated Statue of Liberty. The trip comes after Jessica won a nationwide essay and poetry contest themed Our Statue: Teacher of Liberty, sponsored by the National Association of State Boards of Education.
