Louisiana moves to expand hate crime laws to cover police
Louisiana poised to become first state to extend hate crime protections to police firefighters and emergency medical crews. If signed, prosecutors could seek added penalties for those targeted due to profession. Bill passed House and Senate with little opposition. Gov. Edwards expected to sign. Critics warn it may dilute existing hate crimes statutes and open doors to other job categories.
