The 1954 graduating class of Robert E. Lee High School, numbering 401, will receive diplomas from Supt. George H. Gentry at Memorial Stadium Friday evening. The Maren Construction Co. is lifting a 327 ton concrete slab ceiling into place for the new Travis Elementary School in Lakewood. If begun at 1 30 pm the lift should finish by 3 or 4 pm, using hydraulic racks for uniform ascent. The slab will be welded with plates afterward, while auditorium and cafeteria areas use traditional ceilings.
Five year old Mary Jane Waller, daughter of Mr and Mrs T H Waller of Oakland Estates, began a rabies shot series after a mad cat bit her neck and scratched her shoulder while she played in her yard. Her father killed the cat but could not have its head tested until the Houston lab reopened. He urged Oakland Estate residents to keep pets penned until bite risk is assessed.
Three Highlands students earned the year’s top school honors at Baytown Junior High. Fat Hennecke received the American Legion Citizenship Award. David Kellogg won the same Legion honor. Dra Dunaway earned the Homemaking award from the Baytown Home Economics Society. Awards reflected faculty nominations for character, scholarship, leadership, and service.
Wright Penner Oil Co faced a $1000 fine plus $312.50 costs from the Texas Game and Oyster Commission after wardens alleged salt water and oil from the Wright Penner separators polluted Tabbs Bay. Indictments name Sheffield singly for forgery and uttering a forged instrument related to a land title. Giles resigned as General Land Office commissioner last January. Thomas M. Rosegrant, 33, of Jacinto City, is missing after a fishing trip in Trinity Bay.
