PUC Keeps GTE Hike Down to About $1 Million

The Public Utility Commission staff recommends General Telephone Co. receive less than $1 million of an $84.8 million rate increase. Baytown opposes the hike with the Texas Municipal League and city attorneys citing doubts about cost cuts. If granted fully, local rates could rise 65 percent. staff says the impact on residential charges would be minimal. General Telephone defends its request and will present at the PUC hearing starting May 29.

Baytown Council to fill District 6 seat and create posts

Baytown City Council will appoint a new District 6 representative after Mary Elizabeth Wilbanks resigns effective June 1. The agenda includes transit committee creation, Baytown Area Water Authority and Housing Finance Corp appointments, annexation talks, and a USDH D grant application of 779000 for 1984 program. Also on the docket are rollingbrook drive assessments, a 7 unattended child in a vehicle ordinance, and bids for street improvements and lighting along Garth Road to I 10.

Weather outlook for Baytonia with warm trend

Ex-jailer says Bivins planned inmate release for payoff

Jerry Riley testified that Sonny Bivins, a former Liberty County Jail trusty, planned to release Ward Hamilton for a $25,000 payoff on January 4 1983. Bivins allegedly allowed use of a pickup to take Hamilton to meet the money promiser, where Hamilton was to receive $50,000 before stealing the vehicle and leaving another ex-trusty stranded.

Baytown Unemployment Holds With Minor Dip in April

The Texas Employment Commission reports Baytown’s unemployment at 11.3 percent in April, down 0.1 from March amid 28,415 employed of 32,034 in the labor force. Harris County also eased, while Liberty and Chambers showed mixed changes and statewide rates fell 0.1.

Beach City man killed on I-10 near Harris-Chambers line

Alvin Joseph Butler Jr. of Tri-City Beach Road died at the scene after an incident on Interstate 10 near the Harris Chambers county line. Witnesses gave conflicting accounts of a confrontation with two black males in a two tone brown van. Butler reportedly involved in an argument and shot, then driven away and later ejected after the car rolled. Authorities are unsure if death came from gunshot or crash. Suspect described as 6 feet 2 inches tall, 220 pounds, with a beard and Afro, wearing a tank top and shorts.

Baytown trustees interview first superintendent candidate

Baytown school trustees began interviewing the first superintendent candidate Tuesday with at least 10 more interviews planned in the coming weeks. The board set aside about 11 of 60 applicants for interviews and will continue through June 15, aiming to announce a successor to retiring Johnny Clark around July 1. Also discussed were Horace Mann Junior School library plans and bids for the project.
