Funds Approved for Highlands Acid Pit Cleanup
U.S. Rep. Jack Fields announced a new 3.36 million federal Superfund grant for the Highlands Acid Pit, lifting total Superfund support to 6.48 million as the project aims for a 7.20 million total cost. State funds will cover the rest. a cleanup contract is to be awarded in about three months with an 18 month cleanup plan, followed by fresh dirt and fencing. The site will be the state’s first orphan site to receive 90 percent Superfund funding.

Soviet death toll from Chernobyl radiation feared rises
