Texas Avenue Oak to Be Honored in Baytown History
The Goose Creek Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a historic tablet at the 300 year old Texas Avenue Oak in Baytown Saturday at 11 a.m. The tree, once a mileage landmark for pioneers, survived road changes and near-traffic hazards before relicensing by Sterling and Pruett. The tablet project, chaired by Mrs John Garrett, aims to preserve the site as a lasting community symbol.

Youth fair rodeo set to begin Thursday at Baytown fairgrounds
The 26th Baytown Youth Fair and Livestock Association rodeo opens at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Baytown fairgrounds with performances again at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Produced by Ludtke-Wing Rodeo Co. participants include cowboys and cowgirls from 10 states competing in bull riding bareback riding steer dogging steer roping tiedown roping barrel racing and saddle bronc. A wild steer saddling contest pits teams from Citizens Bank and Trust InterFirst Bank Exxon Credit Union Mobay General Telephone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12 J&J Cowboy Country Constable James Douglas Baytown Police Association Goings Meat Market Angel Brothers and the youth fair board against the steer. Each night features a bull challenge with a $200 bonus for an eight-second ride.

Ed Bois dAre Alexander, 74, of Baytown, died Sunday morning at a Baytown hospital. Services are pending at Walker Funeral Home in Crosby. He shined shoes for more than 50 years and last worked at American Barber Shop on Texas Avenue. He moved to Baytown from Liberty at age 11 and began shining shoes there in 1931.

Siemsglusz to lead Lutherans at Redeemer Baytown
The Rev. Jon Siemsglusz, 48, is named new pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Baytown at 1200 E. Lybit. He arrives from Brenham where he led Grace Lutheran for 18 years, after earlier service in Lexington Rockdale and Texas District roles. Siemsglusz, born in El Centro California, studied at San Diego State and Concordia Seminary. He and his wife Kathleen live in a Baytown apartment with three children. He spoke of becoming a faithful pastor and enjoying tennis, skiing, gardening, fishing, hunting and travel, with visits to several European and Middle East countries.
