House Opens Debate Today On Defense Appropriation

The House opened debate on a defense appropriation of 31 488 206 000 as Democrats charge reforms in buying. Rep Mahon said most purchases are by negotiated profits rather than low bid. Sikes suggested up to 800 million could be saved with competitive bidding. Republicans claimed profits are largely recovered through renegotiation. Senate actions included a postal workers pay raise of 8.6 percent. Foreign policy critiques arose from McCarthy Knowland and Bridges urging tougher stand against USSR and Red China.
