In Baytown eight schools hosted polio vaccine clinics for 682 children. Of those, 146 refused the shot and 82 were kept from vaccination for various reasons. Blood samples were taken from 93 youngsters, and staff provided slips and name plates to track participation.
Barbers Hill school board approved the full state 402 pay raise for next year. All 22 teachers including administrators will receive raises, lifting the minimum salary to 3105. Seven additional teachers will get raises funded locally. action on other staff salaries deferred. Cedar Bayou visitors addressed the board.
Report describes youths atop a West Bryan water tower as Officer R H Envin arrived and ordered them down. A 36 year old Bayou woman was arrested in Baytown for vagrancy after attempting to obtain narcotics using a forged physician's signature. The suspect had prior offenses.

Adams testified Sen Joseph R McCarthy once told him he hoped G David Schine would be drafted because he was not much use to McCarthy's investigating subcommittee The remark occurred during the Army McCarthy hearings as part of the broader dispute over alleged Communist infiltration at Fort Monmouth N J Adams said McCarthy also cautioned him not to tell Robert F Cohn of the draft attitude The hearing schedule was adjusted to add time daily while McCarthy gained authority to refer Alaska housing inquiry to another committee The testimony centered on McCarthy's charge that the Army sought to pressure him over Schine and other issues including security at Monmouth and Stevens illness and absence from the hearings continues.

New York May 12 UP Nine men were indicted for evading 17.4 million in income taxes in an alleged vast scheme. The defendants set up Cuba and Panama corporations to dodge taxes on Harwood’s Canadian whisky sales in the United States. Charged individuals include Hyman Klein, a Los Angeles businessman, with 4.4 million evaded taxes, plus three Canadians and others in a total conspiracy. The grand jury indictment follows House Ways and Means subcommittee prompts dating from 1452.
A water spout described as a tornado of the sea moved across the Gulf of Mexico about five miles east of Tortugas, Port Isabel, Texas, but the Coast Guard reported no damage. The Weather Bureau at Brownsville labeled the event a waterspout with no further incidents noted.
La Porte hosts a breakfast party for draftees amid fanfare of returning heroes. Caryl Chessman, a 32 year old author convict awaiting execution at San Quentin, was deemed legally sane after a one hour interview by psychiatrist Sr. Samuel Anderson. Anderson diagnosed Chessman a psychopath but concluded he understood right from wrong. Chessman is scheduled to die at 11 am Friday for two rapes and kidnapping with sexual assault.
Widespread thundershowers and high winds swept the Baytown area and much of central Texas Tuesday night, dumping up to 4 inches of rain, knocking out power for an hour in places, washing streets, and sending debris into roadways. Although seven deaths were linked to storms, most damage was limited and rains boosted drought-stricken farms. Temperatures cool ahead of a slow warming trend with odds of more thundershowers along the coast midweek. Rain totals included 9 inches at Taikin and 3.74 inches at College Station during the event.
