Schweitzer Clinic Embraces Modern Advances in Gabon
In Lamabare, Gabon, Dr Albert Schweitzer’s jungle hospital is getting electric lights, a telephone, running water, and a water purification plant. Schweitzer’s daughter Rhena Eckert now leads administration and aims to align the hospital with modern needs while honoring the founder’s legacy. A new land area adjacent to the river site will host wards, operating theaters, and possibly tropical disease research. A generator will replace kerosene lamps. sewer issues are being addressed to reduce stagnant water that bred parasites. Dr Walter Munz oversees a six-doctor team continuing Schweitzer’s work.
