Senate Passes One Year Budget With Teacher Pay Hike
In Austin the Senate approved a one year general appropriation bill totaling 437.7 million dollars that includes a 55.5 million dollar teacher pay raise. The House planned a separate 449.4 million measure with no raise but the Senate bill passed after hours of debate. The final vote on the Senate bill was 22 to 7 with amendments adding 1.7 million dollars and several defeated attempts to add 18 million. Several senators challenged the constitutionality of a one year appropriation.

Old Mailbag Sports Forth Knowledge By HAL BOYLE
Old Mailbag column highlights quirky stats and wry observations from HAL Boyle. It notes 6 million Americans suffer sinus trouble, only 37 percent of motorists always wear seat belts on short trips, and four of five traffic accidents happen in that range. It cites vitamin fads, breakfast impact on marriage, campfire caution, and other miscellany including the tomato as a fruit once called the Jov e apple. It quotes James Thurber and other quips, mentions perfumed checkbooks for women, government record keeping, and fallout from car part testing. It also notes half of workers bring lunch, 34 million pounds of snuff used annually, and ends with a Pollock quote about critics.
