Reserves, Guard Generals Vote To Cut Units
A committee of regular Army National Guard and Reserve generals voted 12 to 10 to drop 15 National Guard divisions and four Reserve brigades. The plan, supported by Secretary McNamara, aims to streamline Reserve forces. It would shift combat units into the National Guard and service support to the Reserve, creating 42 brigades with most men moving to high priority outfits. Officials say about 1,000 units exist in each division and states would gain at least one brigade while some get up to three.
